This article is a three-minute read.

There’s no escaping it – winter is almost with us. Not only is it getting colder, but the clocks go back this weekend too, so it will get darker earlier in the evenings. But there is a way of banishing the winter blues, and that’s to light a real fire.

Lumberjacks – Leading Firewood Suppliers in Ipswich

At Lumberjacks we can supply hardwood logs, heat logs, kindling and firelighters; and if you prefer a coal fire, then we can help there too. All our winter fuel products can be found here.

The Financial Benefits of a Real Fire in 2025

The energy price cap (which sets the maximum rate energy suppliers can charge per unit of gas and electricity) has just increased, so you will be paying more if you choose to heat your home with oil or gas. This means the average household will be paying £1,755 per year to heat their home.

A real fire can be a cost-effective way to heat a specific room (such as the lounge or dining area) for additional warmth. In addition, heating your whole house using a modern, efficient wood-burning or multi-fuel stove, is also a cost-effective way of keeping warm in 2025/26.

The Stove Association has estimated that heating systems using wood-burning stoves are around 13% cheaper to run than central heating from a gas-fired boiler at the present time. Although it is important to bear in mind, this comparison doesn’t include the installation costs.

The Aesthetic Benefits

A real fire is a natural focal point that creates a feeling of warmth and comfort, and it encourages people to gather around the flames and heat. It’s also a great way of relieving stress

The sights and sounds, not to mention the unique smells, of an open fire enhance the home's atmosphere in a way that central heating or electric fires cannot do.

It creates a romantic environment, to enjoy a glass of wine in the evenings, or create a cosy atmosphere while you snuggle up and watch a film.

The Environmental Benefits

Wood, when sourced from sustainable forests and managed woodlands, is a renewable resource. It is generally considered carbon neutral as the carbon released during burning is roughly equal to what the tree absorbed during its life.

Open fires also provide energy security. They aren’t reliant on the National Grid as they won’t be affected by power cuts – and aren’t affected by the energy price cap. So you can have peace of mind with a fire or stove, that no matter what happens if storms hit, you will stay warm.

Winter Fuel from Lumberjacks

At Lumberjacks we act as a one-stop shop for all your winter fuel needs, whether you have a lounge fire, a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove, or a brazier. We stock hardwood logs and sundries, including firelighters and kindling, so you shouldn’t have any problem getting your fire started.

Our hardwood logs can also be used outdoors in firepits and chimineas as well as in any fires inside your home.

We can also order in log stores for you, ensuring your firewood stays dry – remember wet logs won’t burn as easily.

Our Homefire smokeless coal, which we sell across Suffolk, can be used in either fireplaces, open fires or multi-fuel stoves. Whether you opt for our brazier or home fire variety, it will last longer and produce much less smoke than conventional house coal.

You can stock up on your winter fuel by ordering online, or you can visit our depot at 801, Bramford Road, Ipswich. If you have any questions (other than the ones below) you can also call us on 01473 461394.

FAQS:

Should you opt for coal or firewood?

Both types have their benefits. Coal burns for far longer than wood, and at a more predictable rate and a higher temperature. Using firewood, on the other hand, has a better ‘look’ to it. For more details on the various pros and cons, check out our previous blog post here. Most people generally agree, a combination of the two gives the best results.

Why are hardwood logs better than softwood ones?

The hardwood logs, which we stock, are burn for longer than softwood ones, and will generate heat for a much longer period of time. They also don’t produce as many sparks or as much smoke, which is better for your health and safety. For more information, see our previous post here.

Do Lumberjacks offer a delivery service?
