Gate Warranty
Gates are manufactured from quality joinery grade softwood by our Suppliers in Essex.
All timber gates supplied by Lumberjacks Ltd are covered by one year’s workmanship warranty from date of receipt of goods.
Before exposing untreated timber products to the elements. you must ensure our treatment recommendations are adhered to. (Please see below for details)
Gates must have been fitted with reasonable tolerances to allow for seasonal movements. We would always recommend the use of adjustable hinges where possible.
In the rare case a gate fails to perform to its designed purpose due to insufficient workmanship, Lumberjacks Ltd will rectify the fault. However, we will not accept consequential loss in such a case.
Please note: Problems such as water damage and rot are caused by not following treatment guidelines, the use of the wrong treatment or no treatment being applied. These will invalidate any warranty claims.
In the rare instance there is a manufacturing defect, this must be reported prior to hanging a gate.

Softwood gates
Our Redwood Softwood Gates are made using slow grown kiln dried timber and incorporate gate weather features. If the door is supplied untreated (tongue and groove cladded gates) it is important to treat your gates with a UV Oil, before hanging them out in the elements. This prevents moisture ingress, which can cause swelling, warping and degradation of the timber. Make sure that any cut outs and drill holes are also treated with preservative and/or oil. Always refer to manufacture instructions for full process of treatment.
Please note preservative are usually water based and using these alone is not suitable protection, as the preservatives can be washed out of the wood.
If you wish to add colour to you gate a tinted oil can be applied after this. Hanging your gates out to weather for any period prior to applying oil will mean the gates will have chance to absorb water. The consequences will be the gates will become water stained, start to grey and it can lead to movement and rotting in the wood. This would immediately invalidate any warranty.
We do not recommend paint as a maintenance regime for your gates.
Pressure treatment protects the timber against wood rot and insect attack. These treatments do not provide all round protection against weathering. The elements and UV rays will slowly degrade the effectiveness of the pressure treatment.
We therefore recommend that all planed timber gates are treated with a modern UV oil such as Barrettine. This is particularly important when hanging 5 Bar gates as it will help alleviate potential warping due to weathering and UV rays.
Wood oils penetrate the wood grain to replace the natural oils lost over time. Therefore, it is a good idea to check gates and apply oil regularly. This should be part of your yearly garden maintenance.
However, the best way to tell if you need to treat your gates is to check to see if water beads on the wood. If the water does not bead, then it is time for the gate to be oiled.
Please ensure gates are dry before re-oiling and to always follow the treatment manufacturer’s instructions which may include base coats to be applied before the oil.
Why we recommend oil
Timber has a natural tolerance in terms of how much it can expand & contract before succumbing to warping/shrinkage. It is for this reason that Lumberjacks Ltd recommends that you treat all our planed timber gates with a modern UV oil for planed timber such as Barrenttine. Modern UV wood oils are scientifically formulated from natural oils, resins, solvents & chemicals to make them longer lasting & faster drying i.e. more durable than traditional oils. The oils essentially "fill" the microscopic holes as it is absorbed into the wood and stops deterioration.
It is also quite common for small splits (shakes and cracks) to occur during drying; this is nature at work and should not be considered a fault.
However, the application of oil can considerably reduce the appearance of cracks and shakes in the wood, it can also reduce warping. Oil helps to control the absorption/evaporation of the moisture content of the wood. An added benefit of using oil is that it is relatively easy to apply and maintain.
